Visa advice

Supporting your role as a personal tutor

If your tutee has any visa queries or immigration problems you should direct them to the International Student Advice team in the UoP Global. If an International student has a problem that is affecting their studies then you need to be aware that any advice you or your department gives (such as interruption of study or repeating a year) will have legal implications regarding their visa. The International Student Advice team in UoP Global is the only part of the University that can provide immigration advice to students as this is governed by a legal and regulatory body, namely the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC).

We specifically advise on the new Student Route, visas for short-term study and working during studies, and we also provide information on working in the UK after studies.

Students who are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen and arrive in the UK by 31 December 2020 are eligible to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme and we would encourage them to do this where possible. The scheme will close to applications on 30 June 2021.

Students who are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen and intend to arrive in the UK on or after 1 January 2021, will need to apply for a student visa under the UK Government's new Student Route.

Who can use International Student advice?

All non-UK students can use our service.

International Student Advice also offers

The International Student Advisers recognise and understand the cultural changes your tutee may experience whilst studying in the UK and are also available to give help and advice on anything that your tutee may wish to discuss as they settle into life in Portsmouth and the University.

The team organise social activities throughout the year (keep up to date on these events on our official Global Community Facebook group). These activities can help students who are feeling homesick and want to make friends. It is also a great way to see some of the UK and meet other students. Our events are open to all students at the University to promote inclusion and a transnational experience.
