Supporting and signposting tutees
One aspect of the Personal Tutor role is to encourage your personal tutees to reflect on what they are learning and how that learning can be enhanced. Equally important is that you are in a unique position to identify a tutee’s personal/pastoral support needs at an early stage before it impedes their academic progress.
A tutee may occasionally require some encouragement to access student support services. In a few instances you might judge it helpful to make first contact on the student’s behalf and you should seek the student’s permission to do so. However, if you judge that the student is in danger of harming themselves or others, then you have a duty of care to contact the University Wellbeing Service and inform your Senior Tutor or Head of Department. However, in most cases your role will focus on raising your tutee’s awareness of the support that is available so that they can take the initiative themselves.
