Dignity and respect

Supporting your role as a personal tutor

The Equality and Diversity Team works to ensure that the University of Portsmouth is an inclusive supportive environment for all staff and students. This includes, for example, transgender students, students who are carers, students who are experiencing bullying or harassment and students who have children or who are pregnant.

We undertake a wide variety of work to understand and accommodate the needs of our diverse student population and to create conditions where all staff and students are treated only on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential. To support you to advise and to signpost your tutee if they identify any issue where discrimination, harassment or bullying might apply, we have produced policy and guidance on key areas:

If your tutee reports to you that they feel that they have been bullied, or have themselves been accused of bullying, they can contact anyone on the network of harassment advisers here.

The Speak Up Form is also available which is an online tool for recording any incidents of harassment, bullying, violence or discrimination. The form can be completed anonymously, but also allows individuals to identify themselves if they wish to be offered specialist support. Staff can use the Speak Up form to record incidents they have witnessed or been told about by students.
